John Cooper Clarke By Alex Turner
“I was really into John Cooper Clarke when I was younger. I still am. He's got a terrific sense of humour and delivery. I've probably told this story many times, but I used to pull pints in this bar in town where bands could come and play, and Johnny Clarke was supporting the Fall. I'd never heard him before, although people had told me I'd be really into him.
But he came on and did his thing, with his carrier bag full of scraps of paper, really loose and disorganised, and while I couldn't really see him, I could hear him, and could hear the laughter and I could hear that he was totally commanding this crowd.
It's his sense of humour that gets to you, I think. I saw him again another time, and I actually got to meet him then; he was the first person who ever said that he liked the name Arctic Monkeys. Because it's a pretty bad name, we all know that. We used to tell people and they'd be like, ‘What? Why did you call yourselves that ?’
But Johnny Clarke was the first person I'd ever met who really liked it. And if he thought it were a good name, then we were defiantly going to keep it. I haven't seen him for a while- the last time was a few years ago, when we interviewed each other- but his vocabulary, the way he describes things, things like that encourage you to get better.
I first heard him when I was starting to write lyrics, and it showed me what you could be capable of with language. It really gave me a push, you know?
