intervista a nick su 'greater manchester's city life'
Arctic Monkeys
TIME off is something we all look forward to. Even when you’re an Arctic Monkey, a bit of a break from the boys is welcome.
The band’s frontman, Alex Turner, spent his year off moving in to his pad in New York with his celeb beau, MTV’s Alexa Chung, and forming The Last Shadow Puppets. Drummer Matt Helders has remixed and cameoed for everyone from Duran Duran to Toddla T, and staffed Mongrel – a side project from Jon ‘The Rev’ McClure.
But what of bassist Nick O’Malley? “I did my driving test,” he boasts. “Passed third time.
“I had a ‘Nazi’ of a ******* tester on’t second one. He spoke with a really bad impediment and he wouldn’t repeat himself.
“He was going like (Nick mumbles), ‘Go to the roundabout and turn left’, and I’d say, ‘Go to’t roundabout and do what?’, and he’d be like, ‘I told you once’. I didn’t have a prayer.
“On’t first one, fair enough, I crashed. I took someone’s wing mirror off.”
It could happen to us all – was he parallel parking? “No,” he chirps, “I were just driving.
“It were right at the beginning of the test but he made me keep going. Second one, ‘Nazi’ instructor, and then third one I passed with three minor faults.”
'Repetitive'
And by the time the Arctic Monkeys get off their current world tour, he’ll probably have forgotten how to take off the handbrake. Because the band is in the middle of a nine month-long sprint around central and Eastern Europe, the UK and America that started last summer and winds up in Germany in mid-February.
The downtime, says Nick, is what has made this tour possible. “I think it’s quite a healthy thing to not just have Arctic Monkeys as your life,” he considers.
“It’s kind of a welcome thing: when, if we’re not touring, people do other things. If you started getting upset about it and saying. ‘Why are you doing this instead of concentrating on this?’, it’s just gonna cause animosity and probably eventual break up and hatred.
“Before we had that six months off, we’d been touring constantly for two years without a break whatsoever. It got to a point where we were in Europe doing festivals and it rained for six weeks solid and we were just counting off the gigs.
“It was so repetitive every day. We all enjoyed playing, but it’s like too much of a good thing.
“I mean, if it were Christmas every day, you’d hate Christmas. If it were Christmas six months of year, fine! But if it were every day and you had to unwrap your presents, you wouldn’t necessarily want a new aftershave or pair of socks. You’d be like, ‘I’m alright for socks. No presents, thanks. No turkey.’.”
The UK is the most daunting looking leg of this tour. It takes the band into a set of venues they never wanted to play – they’ve been so keen to stay out of the arenas, in fact, that they staged their own two-day festival in Manchester in 2007 to avoid the inevitability of trading up from theatres.
“We never really feel that comfortable in arenas. I’ve only ever been to two gigs at an arena and I’ve never enjoyed them,” says Nick. “It always seems a little bit impersonal and it’s the fact that there’s probably gonna be a game of ice hockey or basketball on the next day – it just doesn’t feel special.
'Styles change'
“I realise I’m not selling our gigs very well to the public here,” he laughs, “but hopefully we’ll try and change that.”
A silent moment of contemplation follows as Nick ponders how the band will turn the arena experience on its head. “We’re just gonna have a Q&A session at the end,” he smiles, “sitting round on beanbags.
“No, we’ve got a surprise where you might think we’ve lost the plot ‘pyro-wise’. I don’t want to give it away. There’s some sort of thing that happens involving stuff,” he promises, vaguely. “Things will happen at some stage."
One thing that won’t happen is a live version of Mardy Bum. Or Teddy Picker. The band is ‘determined’ to move on now their third LP, Humbug, is ready for the road. “There’s some songs that people will really wanna hear that unfortunately we won’t play,” says Nick.
“A few people were kinda shocked by the new record, as though it were massively different, but to us it didn’t feel that different. As you progress as a band your styles change and tastes change and you always wanna be moving in a direction rather than just remaining the same.
“We asked Josh Homme to produce it because he has a lot to do with his own production and we just kinda like Queens Of The Stone Age’s way of songwriting; they’re a very poppy band without being a pop band – they’re quite a heavy band, but their songs are really catchy and memorable.
“I guess that’s what we wanted to do as well: make poppy, catchy songs but without being really obvious about it. They’re not as instant as the first album, they’re a bit more hard work I suppose. They have to be listened to to be appreciated.
“This one’s more in-depth, I think. Recording in the desert definitely played a part in the way the songs sounded. I suppose you can’t deny that the place has an effect on you.
'Not about the hair length'
“It’s just this peaceful, open expanse and it makes you feel very comfortable and your mind’s very clear. It made us think more about making the album more musical, making it sound more landscape.”
One thing the so-called Americanisation of the sounds has nothing to do with is Alex’s distance from the rest of the band.
Matt, Nick and guitarist Jamie ‘Cookie’ Cook still live in Sheffield: “It’s just Al that’s gone to live with Sarah Jessica Parker,” smiles Nick.
“We all move around for each other, but we’ve got a plan to start practicing via satellite link-up.
“There’s a slight delay but Matt’s pretty good at keeping time so he’s gonna adjust for the time delay.
“The rest of us are still in Sheffield, keeping it real. I’d quite like to live in Berlin, you know. I think I’d definitely always go back to Sheffield but it would be nice to live somewhere for a couple of years and have a change.
“I’ve even thought about moving to Australia when I’m about 40 - that’s my retirement plan. Start a band with The Vines, some sort of supergroup. I’ve got it all planned out. Harold Bishop’s gonna be my best friend.” Perhaps the desert had more of a maddening effect on Nick than he realised? Is the long hair that’s been grown for this record an unconscious sign that madness is setting in?
Nick laughs: “A lot of people have gone, ‘Why have you grown your hair, what’s all this about?’, but it’s just summat you do as you get older.
“There’s been a lot of focus on hair lengths and potential beard growth, but I don’t think it really matters. It’s not about the hair length,” he concludes, “it’s about the head it’s in".

Susan Boyle to challenge Arctic Monkeys for fastest-selling UK debut album ever
'I Dreamed A Dream' also in the running for the fastest-selling UK album of 2009
Susan Boyle's debut album 'I Dreamed A Dream' looks set to go up against Arctic Monkeys' 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' to become the fastest-selling UK debut of all time.
The album, which features covers of The Rolling Stones' 'Wild Horses' and Madonna's 'You'll See', sold over 130,000 copies on its first day of release yesterday (November 23), according to The Official Charts Company.
Boyle is now set to challenge Arctic Monkeys, who sold 363,735 copies of 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not', their debut album, in its first week of release on January 23, 2006.
Even if Boyle does not beat Arctic Monkeys she is likely to feature highly in the fastest-selling UK albums of 2009 run-down. JLS are currently topping the list with their self-titled debut, which sold 230,000 copies upon its release earlier this month.
Speaking of 'I Dreamed A Dream', Boyle said: "It was my greatest ambition to release an album and I have finally achieved it. There is happiness out there for everyone who dares to dream."
The Rolling Stones have reissued 'Wild Horses' following Boyle's performance of the song on last week's edition of 'The X Factor' (November 22).
