The Kaiser Chiefs and the Arctic Monkeys have exchanged harsh words ahead of Thursday's NME Awards ceremony.
Alex Turner, who fronts the Arctics, reportedly commented that if his band became as established as the Kaisers they would quit music.
Now Nick Baines, keyboardist for the Kaisers, has hit back with a jibe at the Sheffield band's songwriting skills.
"We're an easy target because nobody ever slags off a small band," declared Baines. "It'd be better if they were writing better songs than us, but they're not, so they can shut up."
Speaking to magazine Gigwise, he added: "It's not as if I'm hurt or lying awake at night or anything. We'll get on with what we're doing and you get back to packing shelves in supermarkets again."
Meanwhile, a music industry source told London Lite that tempers were flaring ahead of the event at London's Hammersmith Palais.
"The Arctic Monkeys don't have much respect for the Kaiser Chiefs and now the Kaisers have added fuel to the fire by slagging them off," he revealed. "Anything could happen on Thursday, which is slightly thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking for the organisers.
"The Arctics aren't known for their good behaviour. Last year they were kicking their awards around the dancefloor and shouting at anybody who got in their way. So special measures are being taken to try to keep them away from the Kaiser Chiefs."
Along with the Kaiser Chiefs, the Killers, Kasabian and Primal Scream will all be performing on Thursday
