Glastonbury 2007 review
By NADIA MENDOZA and DANIELLE LAWLER
June 25, 2007
COMMENT ON THIS STORY
AFTER Glastonbury was cancelled last year, the rush to get tickets for this summer's festival was on.
The muddiest annual music bash attracts everyone from rockers to hippies and families to indie kids.
But if you weren't lucky enough to party in amongst the mucky fields, here are Bizarre's best acts of the weekend:
BLOC PARTY - Kele Okereke deserves the prize for best frontman of the festival.
The theatrics of his voice and the intensity behind his eyes prove he understands the credentials of showmanship.
He radiated excitement and enthusiasm, while his wild grin looked like there was no where he'd rather be than on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.
His group's concoction of achingly cool guitar riffs, boundless indie-boy energy and the audience rendition of Happy Birthday for bassist Gordon Moakes made them the best band of the weekend.
Killer tune: This Modern Love
Bizarre rating: 9.5/10
DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY - Shirley Bassey rocked the crowd in a diamond-encrusted dress - and became the Dame of Glastonbury.
The Welsh diva hit the stage in a camp £50,000 pink Julien MacDonald frock and silver high heels.
Arctic Monkeys' frontman Alex Turner was invited stageside after he sang a cover of her song Diamonds Are Forever on Friday.
As Shirley belted out the Bond classic, she turned to him and said: "That's how it's done."
She also wowed the crowds with renditions of Big Spender and Goldfinger.
After the show Shirley wore a pair of diamond-studded wellies bearing her initials.
Bizarre has never seen such a glam Glasto set.
Dame Shirley, we salute you!
Killer tune: Big Spender
Bizarre rating: 9.5/10
KAISER CHIEFS - Devout fans traipsed through the mud with inflatable dinosaurs - and were rewarded with a monster performance.
Frontman Ricky Wilson famously crowd surfed on a "Kaisersaurus" in 2005. There was no repeat show but within a couple of songs he was down amid the crowd.
The band, who kicked off the rousing set with Everyday I Love You Less And Less, drew one of the biggest attendances seen over the festival's three days.
They cheered as Ricky told them: "Make a noise if you don't care about the mud" and good-spirited fans changed the chorus to hit Ruby to "muddy, muddy, muddy, muddy".
Tracks The Angry Mob, Take My Temperature and Na Na Na Naa followed and the set ended with Oh My God, during which the crowd drowned out their heroes, with Ricky eventually turning the mic on them.
Killer tune: Ruby
Bizarre rating: 9/10
ARCTIC MONEYS - Alex Turner's band ended the first day of Glastonbury in spectacular fashion.
PAUL WELLER and THE VIEW stood backstage to watch the band address a crowd of thousands.
And the boys made it even more special by performing a song with DIZZEE RASCAL for the first time ever.
The Monkeys invited their families and dozens of friends from home city Sheffield to see their first-ever gig at the famous festival.
They played all the crowd pleasers, including I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and Dancing Shoes.
Hours before the show, Alex, Jamie, Matt and Nick hit the bar to pluck up Dutch courage for the massive gig.
But they did themselves proud - this was a fantastic way to end the first night.
Killer tune: I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor

AMY WINEHOUSE - After torrential downpours and rivers of mud, Amy brought out the sun on the first day of Glasto.
The Back To Black sensation took to the main Pyramid stage and, as if by magic, the clouds parted.
It needed a big voice to warm up the 50,000-strong crowd of sodden revellers - and Amy delivered.
She belted out a soaring cover of Sam Cooke classic Cupid - and directed it at her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, as he looked on from the wings.
There were massive cheers from the mud-caked fans as they sang along and danced to Amy's hits Rehab and Back To Black.
She also dropped in some songs from her debut album Frank, including F*** Me Pumps, to whip the crowd into a frenzy.
Killer tune: F*** Me Pumps
Bizarre rating: 9/10
BJORK - The Icelandic eccentric had the hardest job of the festival - competing with fellow headliners The Arctic Monkeys.
But the incredible crowd who gathered at The Other Stage proved the ice queen needn't have worried.
She was beautiful and playful, managing to look breathtaking despite prancing about on stage looking as though she had just raided her dressing up box.
Highlights included a fab laser show, sneaking in final song Declare Independence and her hypnotic vocals which enchanted everyone.
Unfortunately the quirky star didn't chat much to the Friday night crowd, while the speakers on the right hand side of the stage blew 15 minutes before the end of the set!
But there is simply no one quite like Bjork.
Killer tune: Army Of Me
Bizarre rating: 8.5/10
THE WHO - The Kaiser Chiefs were a hard act to follow, but legends Roger and Pete left everyone smiling at the end of the festival.
From the moment they opened with I Can't Explain, they rocked out 40 years of hits with the raw passion of teenagers.
Their age may be starting to catch up with them, but The Who put on a damn good show and were a wonderful way to end the mudfest.
Had they been on any earlier, then some of the younger acts would have had a run for their money.
Killer tune: My Generation
Bizarre rating: 8.5/10
LILY ALLEN - Dressed in pink attire with a grey hoodie and can of cider in tow, Miss Allen was sensational despite the horrendous weather.
Daddy and blog rants aside, you forget this little starlet is a talented artist in her own right.
She crosses countless genres, is always in tune, bolshy enough to say risqué things - and has more personality than any other 20-something pop diva.
She even snuk in a wonderful cover of Blondie's Heart Of Glass, before guests Lynval Golding and Terry Hall of The Specials joined her for their hit Gangsters.
Killer tune: Not Big
Bizarre rating: 8/10
THE KILLERS - Walking on stage in a glittery white suit, with fireworks roaring into the sky and antlers attached to his keyboard, Brandon Flowers hinted we were in for a treat.
The Las Vegas rockers put on a great show and managed to uphold their 'oomph' from start to finish.
While they experimented with a cover of Joy Division's Shadowplay, the highlight came with Brandon's a cappella version of the Andy Williams classic Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You.
But as with Bjork, there were chants of "turn it up!" throughout the set due to the poor speakers.
Killer tune: Mr Brightside
Bizarre rating: 7.5/10
Not quite on Fire ... Arcaders at Glasto 2007
Not quite on Fire ... Arcaders at Glasto 2007
ARCADE FIRE - The Canadian post-rock fellas certainly took a while to get going.
Despite the impressive lighting and dramatic pipe organs, it took a long time to warm up the soaking wet crowd.
Vocalist Win Butler led the band with conviction and passion, as he crooned through tunes as he sweated buckets.
But with Ian Curtis comparisons, it's unsurprising that at times he looked desperately sad and intense.
Although the band frequently built up to a crescendo of excitement, they then failed to deliver.
The epic vocals salvaged what would've otherwise been a distinctly mediocre performance for a second headlining act.
Killer tune: Wake Up
Bizarre rating: 7/10
THE AUTOMATIC - Although the Welsh rockers did a great job at warming up the festival crowd - it was a cover song, rather than one of their own, that impressed the fans.
The cheeky quartet were greeted with cheers as they blasted out their rendition of Kanye West's Goldigger for their penultimate song of the set.
And although tracks from their No3 album Not Accepted Anywhere went down a treat, the weather was so dreary that anyone would have been a blessing to the punters' miserly faces.
Their indier than thou overtones make them fun enough to bop your head along to - but equally forgettable.
Killer track: Goldigger
Bizarre rating: 6/10
BABYSHAMBLES - Ten out of ten for turning up, but few points for entertaining the dwindling crowd.
Our favourite love-to-hate/hate-to-love junkie Pete Doherty seemed fairly coherent but was hardly a musical inspiration.
But hey, if you can rely on being in the headlines why waste your time in the practice room?
Unsurprisingly, girlfriend Kate Moss put in her obligatory guest appearance during La Belle Et Le Bête - determined not to be left out of the festivities.
Rapper Lethal Bizzle and Statik also joined the party - but with three guest celebs in tow, could it be that Pete can't work the magic alone?
Killer tune: F**k Forever
Bizarre rating: 5/10
