747s & ARCTIC MONKEYS: CONTAGIOUS NEW TRACK
747s and Arctic Monkeys cover classic love song, as guitarist Freddie (747s) catches chicken pox and pneumonia.
The track, 'Baby I Am Yours' will be a B-side to the Monkeys' forthcoming release, ‘Leave Before The Lights Come On’ on both CD and 7” single.
A big hit in the mid-60s for pop soul singer Barbara Lewis, Alex Turner first 'Baby I Am Yours' on an Atlantic compilation while touring in America and decided he needed the dulcet tones of 747s to realise the cover.
747s singer and guitarist Oisin Leech explains, "Arctic Monkeys first heard us, when they were working on their first tracks with Mike Crossey in Liverpool. He had been working with us in the same studio and played the band some of our tracks which they thought were "really cool", especially 'Set Me Free'. Then we met the Arctic Monkeys at Reading and Leeds festival last year and got on really well. Alex phoned Mike and asked him to ask us if we’d like to collaborate on a Barbara Lewis cover for their next b-side. We were in the studio in London so we worked out the harmonies. When we called Alex Turner back to accept the offer he was onstage in Japan so we left him a voicemail singing the harmonies down the phone. He just texted back ‘incredible’.”
747s guitarist Freddie Stitz was unable to record during the session on June 28th after coming down with chicken pox following the bands' performance at Wireless. The pox spread to his lungs bringing on a serious case of pneumonia. To make matters worse Freddie was denied permission to fly home to his mum in Germany as none of the pilots working for the airline had had chicken pox and instead had to be driven by ambulance, whilst his band mates made the recording.
“I sing the lead vocals on the second verse because Alex (Turner) wanted more of a collaboration and less of a guest appearance from us," says frontman Oisin, "Mike (Crossey) set up two microphones with a pane of glass between us, while we sang our verses. Suitably for the song, there was something of the Rat Pack about it all!”
