volendo potrebbero anche andare in tour con questo album per altri due anni ma penso sia normale che vogliano registrare un nuovo album così presto, d'altronde suonano queste canzoni da due anni ormai...
io sono fiduciosa

Arctic Monkeys’ cool future

Clutching their Mercury Prize in a quiet corridor at the London hotel where the ceremony takes place, Arctic Monkeys should be allowed to celebrate.
But enough of letting them rest on their laurels - what of the future?
In the second of a two-part interview, singer Alex Turner and drummer Matt Helders tell PS why they need some time to organise their thoughts…
Fresh from their triumphant Carling Weekend shows, Arctic Monkeys have begun rehearsing their second album.
‘It’s shaping up good,’ says Matt Helders, 20. ‘We started messing about with the new songs last Friday in our rehearsal room.
‘We can’t wait to get on with recording them. There’s no pressure on us, no worries about that. We just can’t wait to get going properly on them.’
Arctic Monkeys are reluctant to describe their new songs, as they’re wary of lapsing into cliché.
‘We’ve learned a lot as musicians,’ says Matt Helders. ‘Not that it’ll be guitar solos every two minutes.’
Alex Turner interjects: ‘Yeah, we have learned a lot as musicians, but we haven’t started taking cocaine or owt like that. We could say ‘We’ve moved on’ but every band thinks that.’
Arctic Monkeys’ main concern is finding a narrative for their new album.
‘There’s a few themes, but I need to organise it’ says Alex Turner. ‘The first album was very organised. By writing a few songs, I managed to piece the idea where everything runs together and it becomes one story.
‘I need to do that with the new stuff. I’ve had the time to write - but not that organisation process.’
Are there any song titles for the album that Arctic Monkeys can share?
‘There’s a few, but I don’t want to give any out,’ explains Alex Turner, 20. ‘I’d struggle which ones to tell you, sorry. If I said any, people start building a picture of what the song’s like, and they might be wrong.’
Matt Helders adds: ‘If all you’ve got is a title, fans go ‘It’s about God, or love!’ when it probably isn’t.’
Has it been easy for Arctic Monkeys to write on tour?
‘Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn’t,’ shrugs Alex Turner. ‘It’s the same writing at home, sometimes that’s easy and sometimes it isn’t.’
Matt Helders adds: ‘What’s hard on tour is keeping up with new music. You can’t really keep up with other bands’ gigs. But we’ve been finding out a lot about older music recently.’
Virtually since day one, A Certain Romance has ended Arctic Monkeys’ gigs. Are any of the new songs rivalling it for set-closers?
‘I don’t know yet, mate,’ laughs Alex Turner, as Matt Helders says: ‘We’ve definitely got a potential opener - a couple of openers, actually.’
Back to Alex: ‘You just know when you get it right. It’s instinct, when music does something to you. It’s weird.’
Arctic Monkeys are passionate about making a fully realised new album.
‘I definitely want to do something that works as a complete record,’ says Alex turner. ‘As much as you can download a few songs and shuffle them about, you have to make a record that’s complete.
‘People say that’s becoming less important, but I don’t think it ever could be. That idea, of making a record as a whole, that’s timeless.’
